Covid Birthday

Gabe turned 13 in the middle of the strictest lock-down. What a time!

What was I thinking with this excessively violent Call of Duty cake? It certainly is a reminder of the time when all the control over screens was lost.

No one could come over, restaurants were closed, by order of the governor, but we had the cutest wait staff right here.

It felt really good to destroy the virus with a giant cotton swab

Gabe is 12

Gabe just wanted a cherry pie. This was the last normal birthday for this guy.

Sprinkles!

This birthday was all about being with friends. The girls painted their own monograms and had so much fun! We had NO idea what was about to come.

Ombre drip

By the time Eloise turned 10, it was less creative endeavor, and more fulfilling an order for a very particular client. She knew exactly what she wanted, and I tried my best! I see all the flaws, but I think my client was satisfied.

Mom's 77th birthday

The best part of the whole celebration is being witness to these two "sister cousins" and the lifetime of memories, support, heartache, and love they share.
The cake
Silly me, I've been so very busy lately, I didn't get any pictures until it was candle-laden. This is a chocolate cake with raspberry swiss buttercream icing. Eloise and I made the flowers and little balls while we binged on the contents of our DVR, then mostly she placed them on the cake.

It was pretty delicious!

Gabe's first cake!

He calls it The Undead Pumpkin of Doom. Always has to go dark, that one. I keep hoping it's a phase and not at all a sign he's going to end up the subject of a true crime novel someday.  But a boy who makes a cake for his family can't possibly be all bad, right?

Mini Hamburger Cupcakes

This was Gabe's request this year, which, as is his tradition, was negotiated down from something that seemed beyond my skills. I can't remember what it was. But something akin to the brains from a couple of years ago. Hamburgers were a happy compromise.

This time I'm doing something I've really never done and sharing a little about the process. I was inspired by this video by Cupcake Jemma, and used the recipes from this post. Both the brownies, and especially, the vanilla cupcakes were delicious. It came out like a pound cake. I'm definitely using that again. Below are all the burger components lined up and ready to assemble.
First, there were the cupcake "buns", then the brownie patties.
Next came the tomatoes, which were gumdrop-like fruit slices rolled out and sprinkled with more sugar.

The cheese was an orange Starburst, rolled out. These were surprisingly hard and really hurt my wrists until I discovered if I microwaved each one for 5 seconds it got easier. Through trial and error, I learned 10 seconds was too long and 2 seconds not enough. 5 was perfect.

The lettuce was shredded, sweetened coconut, dyed green.
I held it all together with red, yellow, and white buttercream "ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise."

The animals boys tore into them before we got to blow out candles or sing Happy Birthday, which I guess I should take as the
best compliment a gang of 11 year olds can give. But Mama has to have her moment, so I made him start over, with two ikea scented candles representing the ones and tens because, turns out, we have no birthday candles.

Happy Birthday, 11 year old!
